Use Known in VS Code

Connect Known to GitHub Copilot in VS Code so its agent can read your company's wikis and record the decisions you make. This takes about 2 minutes.

Before you start

  • A Known account in the organization you want Copilot to use.
  • VS Code with GitHub Copilot.

Add Known

  1. Add Known to .vscode/mcp.json in your project (or to your user settings for every project):

    {
      "servers": {
        "known": { "type": "http", "url": "https://api.known.info/mcp" }
      }
    }
  2. Select Start above the known entry in the file.

  3. Known opens in your browser. Sign in, choose the organizations Copilot may use, confirm it's you, and select Allow.

Check the connection

In Copilot Chat, switch to Agent mode and ask:

Which wikis can you see in Known?

It lists your organization's wikis.

Troubleshooting

  • The server doesn't start. Run MCP: List Servers from the Command Palette, select known, and Show Output to see the error.
  • Copilot can't see a wiki you expected. It can only use the organizations you selected. To change them, go to Settings → Connections in Known.
