# Use Known in VS Code

## Before you start

- A Known account in the organization you want Copilot to use.
- VS Code with GitHub Copilot.

## Add Known

1. Add Known to `.vscode/mcp.json` in your project (or to your user settings for every project):

   ```json
   {
     "servers": {
       "known": { "type": "http", "url": "https://api.known.info/mcp" }
     }
   }
   ```

2. Select **Start** above the `known` entry in the file.
3. Known opens in your browser. Sign in, choose the organizations Copilot may use, confirm it's you, and select **Allow**.

## Check the connection

In Copilot Chat, switch to **Agent** mode and ask:

```
Which wikis can you see in Known?
```

It lists your organization's wikis.

## Troubleshooting

- **The server doesn't start.** Run **MCP: List Servers** from the Command Palette, select `known`, and **Show Output** to see the error.
- **Copilot can't see a wiki you expected.** It can only use the organizations you selected. To change them, go to **Settings → Connections** in Known.
